If you're looking for the simple answer to the question then yes notion is free, but the free plan does have some restrictions so it's worth having a think how you will use Notion to see if the personal free plan will be the right fit for you.

Being one of the most popular productivity tools around, many people who have heard of the tool may likely be wondering if Notion is free and if so what are the limitations.

The great news is of course that there is a free Notion plan and this plan lets you use a variety of features within the tool, this is often more than enough for many people especially if you're using it personally rather than for a business.

How much is Notion

So the next logical question is how much does Notion cost,  the answer depends on the plan you go for, as with most software and tools nowadays it's priced on a subscription basis which you can pay either monthly or annually. It can go from costing nothing to costing hundreds a month depending on how much you use it.

The different Notion plans

Currently, Notion has the free plan which is perfect for individuals, then a 'Plus' plan which is great for people using it more intensely personally as well for freelancers, then a 'Business' plan which is designed for businesses which gives you additional features which are essential for people who are running a company and finally an 'Enterprise' plan which is for larger organizations.

How to get $1,000 of free Notion credits

One of just a long list of things that we love about Notion is the Notio startup program, this gives startups and businesses access to $1,000 of credits which they can use to try out Notion and integrate into their company.

In order to get these credits you need to be associated with a Notion partner such as FounderPass, this allows you to apply for the credits, you can find more and apply for the credits on the Notion Coupon page.

Notion Startup credits

You may be wondering how these $1,000 of Notion startup credits work, put simply you can apply for the credits using the steps below:

  1. Make sure you're a member of a startup organization such as FounderPass (this costs $99/year)
  2. Visit the Notion page and follow the steps
  3. Once you've applied, as long as you're a member of a startup organization like FounderPass you'll be automatically accepted.
  4. You'll be given $1,000 of Notion startup credit that can used towards the Plus plan

Who is eligible to apply for the Notion Startup Program

The great news is that any startup can apply for this, as long as you're working with one of their partners like FounderPass you'll be automatically accept

How much does Notion cost

Lets say you're looking for a productivity tool or app that can help you organise your life and work a little more, in this case the 'Personal' plan would be more than enough and so Notion would be free for you, below you'll see some examples of how much Notion may cost based on different scenarios.

Small business with 5 team members

In this scenario, either the 'Plus' or the 'Business' plans would be suitable with the difference coming down to page history, private team spaces and a few other features. The Plus plan would cost this business around $40 per month and the Business plan would cost $75 per month.

Larger business with 25 employees

In this example, the 'Business' plan would more than likely be the best option due to the size of the company and this would work out at $375 per month.

Is Notion free for students

Adding to our long list of great things about Notion as a business is that they offer Notion free for students and for teachers, this is done so through their personal plan, which is great as it allows people within education to use the tool and help increase productivity.

If you're an education facility or work as part of a school and looking for a more complete Notion plan that can have all the features then you can enjoy Notion discounts via the Notion for Education page.

Notion student discount

Notion Student discount

No need to go hunting for a Notion student discount code, you can simply head across to the Notion site via the link above and sign up and get on to the free plan. It's super easy to do and gives you a great number of features that most students will use and not exceed or require anymore.

No need to look for a Notion student promo code anymore, just sign up as a student and you'll be able to take advantage of everything they offer the education sector.

Is the Notion personal plan enough?

If you're planning on using Notion just for yourself and not with additional people, be that family, work colleagues or friends then the personal plan can often be enough. You'll still be able to share your pages but there is a limit on the number.

One of the best features of the free plan is that you can access Notion across devices for free, many of Notions competitors charge for you to sync across platforms but with Notion its included in the personal plan.

The free plan also isn't a free trial like some other companies offer, whereby you think it's free but it's just giving you a time-limited example before requesting payment.

This makes it one of the most compelling in terms of free offerings of any productivity app and hence why millions use it on a daily basis, of course they are hoping that you'll love the tool and want to upgrade to use additional features but that is the same with any SaaS pricing model.

Alongside the above, there are certain limitations such as file uploading and ability to share with more than a set number of people, so if you think these are features you'll likely want to use it may be worth either trying the paid plans or upgrading when you've seen if Notion is the right tool for you.

The personal plan still is incredibly powerful and if you devote some time to learning how it works (we highly recommend reading and/or watching the tutorials as well as some of the most popular YouTube tutorials) then you can set up Notion to do almost anything you can think of in terms of note-taking, productivity, tasks and more.

Notion for nonprofits

Notion for Non-profits

Lastly, we take a look at the Notion nonprofit discount, this program is currently limited to those nonprofits who have a 501(c)3 registration if you do have one you'll be eligible to apply for a 50% Notion nonprofit discount on Plus plan.

If you're a non-profit that doesn't have that then it could either be worth looking into the personal plans and seeing if they could fit with what you're after, or alternatively if you're a newer charity and wanting to take advantage of the startup credit offer it could be worth applying for that (you can read more at the top of this article).

If you don't feel like you fit the above, then it may be a case of purchasing one of the plans, although you may not get a nonprofit discount code to use you will still be using a tool which can help increase the productivity and efficiency of your non-profit business and hence save money that way.
