1Password Review

If you've never used a password manager before then you need to, if you've used one in the past or currently do then you'll already know how good they are and how much they can help benefit you personally in terms of being efficient but also your business in terms of security.

1Password is one of the leading password managers globally, it helps to protect all of your data and allows you to have all of your login credentials securely kept in a password vault, meaning your password management will be a whole lot easier!

In simple terms, 1Password is the password manager for both personal but also business user and we'll go into a deeper look into each user case later.

How much does 1Password cost?

You've got a variety of different plans to choose from when it comes to 1Password, if you're looking for a personal password manager then you've got a simple $2.99 per month option that is billed annually or you can extend it to your family members so the price is $4.99 per month but allows up to 5 family members to use it.

1Password pricing

These plans allow you unlimited passwords, use of all of the password manager apps from the desktop app to the mobile apps, the ability to share passwords, credit card details, the protection of two factor authentication and many more features.

If you're looking for 1Password business plans then you'll find that the Business plan starts at $7.99 per user per month, there is a great offer for small teams of up to 10 users where by you can get the Teams Starter Pack which is $19.95 per month (billed annually) which allows up to 10 of your team to use it.

1Password business pricing plans

You'll get all of the features you'd expect within these plans from unlimited passwords to unlimited shared vaults, item storage and decent amount of document storage per user (1GB on teams and 5GB per user on 1Password Business) s well as all the security you'd expect including the two factor authentication. The business plan additionally gives you the ability to create custom groups so you can organize your team, custom roles so you can give certain users the ability to set permissions, activity logs, and security features such as a security dashboard which will highlight any potential security issues with passwords, 1Passwords Business Watchtower reports and much more.

For larger teams you can get a customized price for the Enterprise version which gives you the benefit of a dedicated account manager, tailored setup and more. This is the preferred method for larger organizations that want a secure password manager.

We feel all of the above offer great value and are pretty competitive for the features that they offer, all of the plans come with a free 1Password trial of 14 days.

Note: We do check the pricing on a regular basis, but please check on the companies website for the most up to date and accurate pricing.

How does 1Password work?

1Password is a password manager software, it allows you to create one master password that then gives you access to all of your other passwords and login credentials. Meaning you only have to remember that single password in order to be able to login into all of the websites you use, all of the software you have and to be able to access documents you can store within the software itself too.

It means you no longer have to worry about remembering which email you signed up to that website with and what password you used, sign in once and you can add it to your password vault via the browser extension, desktop app or mobile app and then it's securely stored, when you next come on you'll be able to have it automatically filled in for you.

The other main features are the auto form fill, which remembers your important details such as your identity (name, email, address etc) and your payment card details and allows you to auto fill forms on websites with them, rather than having to type it all in yourself manually.

In summary, you sign up and create a master password, with this you'll be able to then save any future logins and details, making your life easier and more secure.

1Password's Security

Security features of 1Password

With any password manager review, the security features are one of, if not the most important feature when it comes to trusting the company to have them as your password manager. Password managers offer many different ways to both have access to your secure passwords both when you're at home or the office as well as being a secure remote password solution to those that work remotely.

1Password as one of the leading password manager tools have a variety of security features but the key ones are:

  • AES 256-bit Encryption - Put simply, this is the same type of encryption that banks use to secure all of your banking data, on top of this you'll also get a 34 character 'Secret key' from 1Password which is used when you first sign into your password manager for added protection
  • Master Password - Your account master password is known only by you, 1Password do not store this, giving you protection if your device is taken
  • SRP protection - 1Password uses SRP to help authenticate who you are without it being sent over the internet.
  • Two factor authentication - An option for you to turn on, this gives an additional layer of protection meaning when you want to sign in to your 1Password account from a new device you'll need to authenticate your account too.
  • Brute-force protection with PBKDF2 - essentially making it harder for programs to guess passwords through brute force attacks
  • Be alerted to breaches - For 1Password business users you can take advantage of the Watchtower system which will alert you and your users if there have been any password breaches or other security issues with your account and data

Having Multiple Password Vaults

One of our favorite features of 1Password is the ability to create multiple password vaults, this allows you to keep certain data such as 'personal' data separate to your 'business' data or potentially you could keep all of your internal passwords secure in one vault and keep external login details secure in another password vault.

1Password also allow you the ability to share documents that are kept in your secure vault with other users both of your team and to external people no matter if they are a 1Password user or not, this is a fantastic feature, especially for business users.

1Password as a Password Manager

When writing this 1Password review we always make sure we look at the other alternatives available to users, this helps us weigh up if 1Password as a password manager is a good choice for you.

As you can imagine there are multiple password manager tools and software available but we always like to recommend founders, entrepreneurs and individuals to go for the larger companies. The reasoning behind this is they are the companies that have invested to most in the infrastructure, technology and development that helps to keep your data safe. The businesses such as 1Password which have been around since 2005 have over 20 years of experience, so they know what they are doing and they do it well.

Of course this doesn't mean that they are immune from security breaches and hacks, in fact it can make them more of a target due to the amount of users and data they have but they also have whole teams dedicated to the security of the password manager and the passwords and data kept. Having said that there have been high profile hacks such as LastPass being hacked in 2022 and that did lead to users moving from LastPass to 1Password so bear that in mind, no company can promise they will never get hacked or that there will never be a security breach and if they do claim they can we wouldn't listen to them!

1Password form filling feature

Gone are the days when password management was the sole feature of password managers, auto form filling is now a big feature, this essentially means data that you often fill into forms such as your name, address, credit card details and so on can be saved on websites you choose, meaning the next time you visit the particular form it will be auto-filled for you, saving you time and hassle of having to either type them in or find your credit card to fill in the forms.

You'll also be able to select your credit card or debit card details or other information such as your address (or full identities) from the 1Password extension and have that fill in a form on a new website you've not been to before. You may be required to put in your master password in some cases on certain websites.

1Password Password Generator

If you're looking for a strong password then you'll love the password generator that 1Password have and the best news is that it's not only for 1Password customers, it can be used by anyone and produces you with a strong password which is great to be used as master password or any other application when you need a password to be strong (you should always have a strong password no matter what you're using it for)

Why do you need a strong password? Well put simply the weaker your password the easier it is for hackers or attackers to find it, they can try millions of password combinations a minute so making your master password or any other password stronger is one simple way you can help protect yourself.

Don't forget to also change your password regularly for any login, this adds an extra layer of security and one you can do yourself easily.

Sharing passwords and login credentials

It's great to be able to have all your passwords securely stored for your use but there are times when you need to share these or your login details with someone else, whether this is a family member, work colleague or client, with 1Password you'll be able to share your password or any of your data in your vault with anyone by generating a link that you can send them.

This link can be set to expire in a variety of ways from a time frame such as an hour, 24 hours, a week etc to making it expire after it has been opened the first time.

The great news if that you can send this link to anyone it doesn't matter if they have a 1Password account or not

Desktop and Browser Apps

1Password browser extension

When it comes to how you actually use a password manager you generally have two main options, one is a desktop app and the other is browser extensions. These two are generally the most popular ways to use password managers and hence most of the big players in the industry make sure both are easy to use, secure and the best they possibly can be.

The 1Password desktop app is a great option for many and it's available for both Mac and Windows users both are very intuitive to use and are beautifully designed too.

For most users you'll likely download either the desktop app and browser extension as well as the mobile app, so your password management is sorted across all platforms.

1Password Ios & Android Mobile apps

IOS and Android

As you'd expect with most password managers, 1Password has apps for both iOS and Android, meaning you can take your password manager with you wherever you go, giving you that added security that you can log in with your credentials safely whilst on your mobile phone. Using your master password can mean you then get access to all of your passwords, documents, auto fill and more on your mobile.

Whilst doing this 1Password review we tested both the desktop and mobile apps and compared them to other password manager apps available.

Other password managers also have these features and its pretty much a standard that you can use all of the features you'd expect on both desktop apps and browser extensions whilst on the move.

Is 1Password good for personal and family use?

As one of the leading password manager tools around put simply it is a good choice if you're looking for a way to manager your passwords on a personal level, it's also great at doing it for you and your family as a whole.

There are two plans available to you, either a personal one that gives just yourself access to the features and then there is a family plan which gives yourself plus up to five members of your family access to the software.

The family plan also gives you added features such as the ability to create vaults that are private as well as vaults that you can share with your family, this includes family member permission management too.

Is 1Password good for business use?

The simple answer is yes, the reasons behind this are that 1Password have dedicated business plans and features which are designed with businesses in mind, from their 'Watchtower' which alerts you to password vulnerabilities in your teams passwords to allowing people to easily share logins within your organization.

If your team are still sharing passwords via email or in the likes of Slack or another messaging service then you really do need to consider a business password manager like this, over 80% of all breaches involve a human being the one of the contributing factor, from them having a weak password to sharing passwords or login details in unsecure ways.

With 1Password business plans you can not only reduce the risk of these types of security breaches but you can make your teams life a lot easier with the tools and features that a password manager such as this has to offer.

Over 1,000 companies including some of the largest companies in the world like IBM, Intercom and Shopify use 1Password within their organizations so you'll be in good company if you decide it's the right choice for you and your business.

We love 'Travel Mode'

1Password have this lovely little feature called 'Travel mode' which basically means you can restrict what information is available to use, this means when your going abroad or on holiday you can restrict your vaults. Mark the ones you want to be visible as 'Safe for travel' and these will be available to you.

A great feature if you're a regular traveller or even if you go away once a year it's a very useful feature to have.

1Password free version

If you're looking for a free version of 1Password then sadly you'll not find one, this is because 1Password don't currently offer any free versions, the lowest priced plan you can get is around $2.99 a month but it does come with a free 14 day trial so you can try it before you commit to paying and if it's not quite right for you then can cancel your free trial.

1Password Free Trial

Good news, if you're looking for a 1Password free trial then you'll find that with all of the different plans from the lowest cost personal plan all the way to the 1Password business plan you'll be able to try a 14 day free trial, meaning you'll get two weeks to see if the software is right for you. If you don't like it or it doesn't quite work for you then as long as you're within the free trial period you'll be able to cancel and not be charged. What

1Password alternatives

If you're wanting to consider other password managers then we'd recommend you look at 1Password alternatives such a Dashlane, LastPass and Roboform. 1Password discount

Whether you've read this 1Password review or if you're already aware of 1Password and want to sign up and are looking for a 1Password discount then we've got the latest 1Password discounts available to use, these 1Password coupon codes often give you extended free trials, a discount on your annual bill or some form of deal.

We work directly with the company to offer you any 1Password coupons so if we have any available you can rest assured that they will be valid and working, we never scrape websites for coupons and list them we only list deals which 1Password have given us directly to pass on to our members.

1Password Conclusion

1Password are one of the top password managers around, with 20 years of experience protecting users data and allowing them to manage their passwords in a much more secure and efficient way they've won millions of customers from all over the world.

Their software is both widely available across different platforms, easy to use and most importantly secure. All of the main features that the majority of people will need are available in all of the plans with the only exception being if you're a business and want to be fully protected we'd recommend going for the full 1Password Business plan for extra features and peace of mind.

The only downside we can see is a lack of a free version, however when it comes to password and data security we think that a few dollars a month isn't going to break the bank so it's certainly worth considering even if you are looking for a free version.
